November Newsletter

Uh oh! It's that time of year. The messages come weekly. " Sorry Karen, I won't be coming to bootcamp anymore..." It truly saddens me whenever a member leaves us. Of course many have perfectly good reasons and I always appreciate the ones who do inform me as to those who just disappear never to be seen or heard from again. I get it. This time of year is not the most appealing for outdoor exercise. Believe me I don't enjoy the prospect of standing outside in the rain but do you know why I go out there on a dark winter's evening? My motivation comes from the fact that even in the wildest of weather people will still show up to sessions, ready to push themselves, improve their strength and endurance and know that they will feel better for it afterwards. They all have their own reasons for being out there, something made them get out of the house, turn up to a dark park (not as sinister as it sounds!) and do a 45 minute, potentially lung busting, muscle aching workout. For those that have been coming for years perhaps it's habit and an opportunity to meet up with friends and like minded people, for those less than a year perhaps they have realised how much they have improved over a few short months. Whatever the reason, as long as their motivation doesn't wane then neither will mine!

Bootcamper Event Participation

Once again the weather turned out fine for the Great South Run last month. Well done to those who took part in any of the events held that weekend.
Sue from Fareham also completed the 5 mile ghost run in Portsmouth last Friday night in very wet conditions.
Check out the event list at the bottom of the page as there are a few festive frolics to take part in this year.

Banger and Beans

You can't beat a hearty winter dish like this one. Cannellini beans are high in fibre and protein so will help you keep fuller for longer. For a veggie option just replace the sausages with a veggie version.
Ingredients
3tbsp vegetable oil
1 onion finely chopped
celery chopped
4 rashers of streaky bacon (optional)
1 tbsp tomato puree
2 x 400g chopped tomatoes
2 tbsp dark brown sugar
2 tsp Dijon mustard
thyme
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2 x 400g cannellini beans rinsed and drained
2 chopped red peppers
2 x 450g packet of sausages

Method
Heat 2 tbsp oil in a large flameproof casserole. Add the onion, celery and bacon, then cook for 5-10 mins until softened. Turn up the heat and add the tomato purée. Cook for 2 mins, then add the chopped tomatoes, sugar, mustard, thyme, Worcestershire sauce and 200ml water, then bring to the boil. Cook, uncovered, over a low heat for 15 mins. Add the beans and peppers, then simmer for 15 mins more, topping up with a little boiling water if needed.
Meanwhile, heat oven to 190C/170C fan/ gas 5. Toss the sausages with remaining 1 tbsp oil and spread out on a baking tray. Cook for 30 mins until browned all over, turning occasionally. Nestle the sausages among the beans, then cover and place the pan in the oven. Cook for 30 mins more. Remove from the oven, and serve with baked sweet potato and green vegetables. Can be made up to 2 days in advance and reheated in a low oven or on the hob.

      Boxercise course

Due to the success of our 8 week Boxercise course I will be running some additional dates at the end of the 8 weeks. These will be held at Catisfield Memorial hall in Fareham on a Sunday at 9:30am. Spaces are available on 24th November, 1st, 15th and 22nd December. If you would like to come along and give it a go then it's £6 per session which must be booked in advance as there is a limit of 12 people per class due to the hall size. It doesn't matter if you have never done any boxing before as we go through the basics at the start of every session. It's a lot of fun and an amazing calorie burner so perfect for burning off all those mince pies and chocolates in the run up to Christmas!
For anyone that attends you will be given the first opportunity to book onto January classes which will run until early April on the same day and at the same time and venue. There will be the option to choose how many sessions you attend as I appreciate not everyone will be free for a 12 week stint! If you are interested in attending any of the November/December dates then drop me an email for further details.

If you are super organised and started thinking about Christmas shopping already or you are tired of receiving the same old tat year in year out then I have personal training vouchers also available at competitive prices for you to purchase for a loved one or to get a loved one to buy for you. What could be better than the gift of improving somebody's health?

      Bootcamp social events

We had a very enjoyable and successful evening at the Cams Mill pub quiz last week, coming second out of 14 teams. Well done to the ladies who took part. We seem to make a good team as this is the second time we have come second place. We will be gunning for first next time!

Our Christmas social is our next event on Friday 6th December at Gunwharf. A game of bowling is booked for 8pm and then wherever the night takes us after :-) I have booked for 11 people so far but if anybody else would like to join us then let me know.
