There are many reasons why you might choose not to exercise. The most common reasons I hear are

I don't have time
I don't have the money
I have an injury
I'm too scared
I will join a class when I'm a bit fitter

Do any of these resonate with you, maybe not now but once before or possibly will in the future?

Time - we are all busy people these days with work and family commitments but just 20 minutes of exercise or physical activity can make a real difference. I find it helps to put in my diary at the beginning of the week the day and time I will do a work out - it's an appointment for me time and if that means having to get up a little earlier then so be it. Depending on practicalities maybe you could do a workout in your lunch hour or go for a quick power walk.

Money - you don't have to join a gym or class or have a personal trainer to get fit. There are thousands of workouts online that can be done from the comfort of your own home or just invest in some decent trainers and go for a run. There are local Parkrun events held every Saturday morning around the country which is a 5K timed event. The best thing is that it's free and you don't have to run! A tailwalker is there to bring up the rear so you won't be left on your own either. All you need to do is register, print off your barcode and turn up.

Injury - depending on the nature of your injury you should still be able to do some sort of exercise. If it's your lower body that's affected try doing more upper body workouts and vice versa. Or perhaps stick to low impact exercise eg swim instead of run. If you're not sure what you can and can't do ask a professional for advice. If you're receiving treatment for your injury you may be given rehab exercises. Make sure you do them so that you can get back on track sooner.

Anxiety - maybe you had a bad experience in the past when exercising. Did you hate PE at school or are you worried you will look silly? Most of the time people in the gym or a class are more focused on what they themselves are doing to be interested in anyone around them. If it helps, maybe try and workout or go to a class with a friend. Do you think it will be painful? It may be uncomfortable to start with but once those dormant muscles start getting used more regularly that day after soreness will be less frequent.

The whole "I will join a class when I get fitter" is flawed in every way. It's a bit chicken and egg scenario. At what point do you decide you're fit enough? You have to start somewhere and where better than a class that will offer a structured workout in a group of like minded people. The purpose of a class is to help you get fit and most will cater for all levels of ability.

So whatever your current reason for not exercising is could you possibly find a way round it? Are they real reasons or just excuses? Start tackling your excuses one at a time and see what a difference it could make to your health and fitness goals.
