So the clocks have gone forward, the lighter evenings are here and it’s started to get a little milder. With spring now here it’s the perfect time to ditch the excuses and use the better weather to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. If you’re stuck in the office or at home all day you are forcing your body to use stale air which makes it harder for your body to function properly.

Getting some fresh air can help your body in the following ways:

It is good for digestion – it will help you digest food more efficiently. Try and go for a short walk after eating your lunch.

It can improve your blood pressure and heart rate – polluted air makes your body work harder to get the oxygen it needs

It makes you happier – Serotonin (the feel good hormone) is affected by the amount of oxygen you inhale so the more fresh air you have the more refreshed and happier you will feel.

Our white blood cells need oxygen to work properly - exposing ourselves to fresher air we have a better chance of fighting infection.

Fresh air cleans your lungs - helping them to dilate more fully and cleansing them as you exhale.

Your brain needs 20% of the oxygen you breathe in - more oxygen will help you think clearer, improves concentration and has a positive effect on your energy levels.

With the better weather comes (well hopefully!) exposure to more sunlight which also has its set of benefits. Spending just 30 minutes in the sun each day is enough for our bodies to absorb our daily requirement of Vitamin D. This is an essential vitamin for keeping our bones strong and preventing diseases such as osteoporosis.

Being out in the sun for just 15 minutes at the same time each day, especially in the morning, can help shut off melatonin, the chemical responsible for making us sleepy. This will help your body develop a more stable night time and day time clock so helping you to sleep when it’s time for bed.

I always find the sunshine lifts my mood and try to be out in it as much as I can. Of course there is always the risk of too much exposure so be sensible and if you are going to be out in the sun for a long period of time then wear sun screen on any exposed areas of skin.

So whether it’s just a 20 minute walk or a full on workout there are many benefits to spending some time outside.
