May Newsletter

How was your Easter? Wasn't the weather amazing! Did you have your first barbecue of the year or day on the beach? In this country we always feel lucky when the good weather comes along as it always feels it's only for a short period of the year. Our bootcamps definitely get busier as people want to be outdoors when the evenings are generally lighter, warmer and drier and what better place to exercise than down on the beach at Stokes Bay.

Although we may be more active being outdoors in the summer, it can be almost as bad as Christmas when it comes to unhealthy eating habits. Burgers and sausages on the barbecue, cocktails and beer in the sun, ice cream or fish and chips down the beach will all take it's toll if consumed on a regular basis and by the end of the summer you may find those winter clothes don't fit as well as they used to.

My top tips for a healthier summer are:
  • Avoid red meat on the barbecue and try marinated chicken on skewers with vegetables like mushrooms, peppers and onion. Fish is also great on the barbecue, try sardines, mackeral or prawns.
  • Fill your fridge with seasonal fruit to snack on or edamame beans. Olives, feta and tomatoes can also make a tasty afternoon snack.
  • Try eating ice lollies instead of ice cream. Make your own with greek yoghurt, fruit and a dash of honey
  • Cut cocktail calories by using clear drinks like gin mixed with a low calorie mixer and then lots of ice. You could infuse it with some berries as a twist
  • Be aware of the high calorie content in some dressings and sauces. Try mixing lemon and vinegar with a little mustard for a dressing, or make your own healthy tzatziki by mixing yogurt and grated cucumber (squeeze the cucumber in a kitchen towel first to get rid of excess moisture) with garlic and salt

What's happening at Bootcamp this month?

I am excited to welcome 18 new bootcampers who have joined our 6 week beginner bootcamp course at Bath Lane, Fareham and Stokes Bay, Gosport. My aim is to ensure that they all finish the course with the right knowledge to complete a workout safely and effectively and more importantly ENJOY exercise.
In our regular sessions we now have Charlene Young instructing for me whilst I take the beginners course and on days I need to cover Louise at Portchester. I am sure Charlene will bring something different to our sessions.
DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
Wednesday 1st May - Sessions start at Stokes Bay 6:30pm
As Privett Park is getting busy on a Monday evening with cricket and kid's football our usual bootcamp session will be moving to Stokes Bay as of 13th May. Our last session at Privett Park will be Bank Holiday Monday (6th May)
There will be no session at Portchester on Wednesday 22nd May due to instructor availability. Don't forget you can still attend any of our other bootcamps at Fareham or Gosport instead.

Bootcamper Event Participation

This month some of us took part in Hundred Acres 10K which was tough, muddy and hilly but very enjoyable. The lovely Pooh themed medal made the effort worthwhile! Entries are already open for next year where there is the option to do the 5K too. It would be great to get a few more bootcampers get muddy feet!

Congratulations to Emma Haw one of our regular Metafit class participants. Earlier in April she won two silvers and a gold at the SEKU National Karate championships in Portsmouth.

Chicken pasta - with a twist

This is not just another boring pasta dish, this is super light and tasty. Use wholewheat penne or spaghetti and mix with plenty of fresh ingredients such as spinach, tomatoes, basil and garlic. Add chicken, sundried tomatoes and....artichoke hearts (I bought the anitpasti version). Toss all together with some olive oil and you have a simple, filling, healthy dish. Make sure the pasta doesn't make up more than a third of your plate. Fill the rest with the veg and chicken.

Did you know....a pound of muscle burns 10 x more calories than a pound of fat! That's one of the reasons it's important to include resistance training in your exercise programme.

Personal Training

With summer just around the corner it's time to start thinking about looking and feeling more confident in those summer clothes so you don't need to hide behind baggy t-shirts when the sun comes out. I currently have space during the week for personal training. Sessions would be either early morning or during school hours and you would have to travel to me at Fareham. Email me if you would like further details or to book for a free consultation.

Event list 2019

Signing up to an event is a great way to keep motivated and is even more fun when done with others. If you want to join them then sign up using the links below or if you have one to add to the list drop me an email and let me know. I would be particularly interested in any obstacle course races where we can work as a team. You don't have to be the fittest or strongest to take part in an event, it's all about maybe just stepping out of your comfort zone and having a go. Don't forget your bootcampers and myself are always there to support you both before and during the event itself.
